BLENDed Learning 101 - An Introduction to BLEND

This course is intended for instructional staff and campus administrators who are new to BLEND. Participants will learn the mechanics and navigation of BLEND while experiencing a BLENDed learning environment. Participants will have the opportunity to experience BLEND and create initial content in the system. BLEND, AISD's learning positioning system (LPS), is being built upon the Canvas learning management system. By pinpointing, tracking, and delivering individualized learning, BLEND provides students, teachers, and parents the ability to identify where a student is on their learning journey toward his/her academic success and graduation. Discovery Education STEM Academy: Connecting the Dots

The Discovery Education STEM Academy has a focus on highlighting strategies to support STEM teaching and learning in all PreK-12 classrooms across all content areas. STEM is not about just teaching about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; it is a culture that needs to be cultivated to help develop skills critical to innovation such as problem solving, creativity, and critical thinking. Participants will be asked to have critical discourse, take part in immersive activities, and reflect on how to implement strategies in their own classroom and schools. This professional development provides: 1) An intense focus on instructional practices to successfully apply a STEM philosophy in their classroom and school; 2) A dive into practices and reflect on how to build them into their curriculum to maximize student engagement and achievement; 3) STEM instructional strategies connected to the demands of all content standards; and 4) Action steps for immediate application of their learning. Preregistration required. JASON is a (501)c3 organization dedicated to inspiring and educating students everywhere through real science and exploration. Founded by Dr. Robert Ballard after locating the RMS Titanic, JASON integrates the nation’s leading scientists into every curricular component, highlighting real-world phenomena and application, making STEM relevant and engaging for students. Earth Camp Field and Curriculum Training

Earth Camp is a water quality science education program focused on watersheds and the Edward's Aquifer.  Lessons and field investigations includes geography and natural history, water quality monitoring, hydrology of the aquifer, human impacts and solutions.  Thirty percent of the AISD Science Curriculum Road Map vocabulary for 5th grade is covered through hands-on science investigations in the classroom and field. All content is correlated to the TEKS.  This training is for Title I schools only, and is required for any fifth-grade registered for a week of Earth Camp. Participants should plan to meet at McKinney Falls State Park no later than 8:45 am for the field portion of the workshop (9:00 am - 12:00 pm); please dress appropriately for rugged terrain. Some ideas on what will be going on: Austin ISD cloud tools, Google Drive and Google Docs, online versions of the textbooks, Seesaw, Educreations, Quizizz, teacher-made online tools… and more!

Learning how to access Austin ISD cloud when you are a 2nd grader can be tough, but it opens the door to a huge amount of possibilities to explore with all the tools you have available in there. Using the online version of the textbook may not be 100% transformational, but helps with differentiation and allows to adapt to the pace of each student and to “flip” your classroom in some way. Using Quizizz to assess instead the usual paper and pencil strategy makes 100% full engagement a real picture of your classroom. These, and many other ideas, will be shared during our workshop so we may learn from one another and search ways to make our students more successful.

Bringing Hands-On Robotics and Real-Life Applications to the Classroom
The program provides equipment, software, curriculum and professional development to elementary and middle school educators (K-8) to enable them to teach their students to write computer code coupled with real-life applications of the engineering design process. The inquiry-based program focuses on discrete programming skills and engineering design concepts designed to improve computational thinking skills and promote mastery. The program is sustainable as schools can reuse the equipment allowing for continued participation. In this session, we will discuss the Eco-Schools USA awards progression and incorporate PBL and science curriculum resources into a plan that will help teachers prepare to reach their desired award level by the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Creating a meaningful Anchor chart/graphic can be difficult. I will attempt to assist teachers in the realization that you don't need to be an artist to make meaningful anchor charts. Based on the needs of each session group, I will attempt to connect main ideas in digital and 2-D formats. Participating teachers will be able to brainstorm alone or in small groups to create a finished take-home anchor chart. We will see examples, plan, design, and illustrate our ideas. These skills will allow teachers to think outside what may generally be given in the curriculum to go deeper in explanations and visuals. Science Education for Tomorrow: Population, Biodiversity, & Sustainability

In this hands-on workshop, the presenter will engage participants in interdisciplinary activities that help students explore human impacts on the planet including population growth, threats to biodiversity, and compromised ecosystems. Teachers will participate in activity simulations and discussions for around 80% of the workshop, so be prepared to be up and moving! While engaging students in complex problem solving tasks, the presented activities also stimulate creative thinking and motivate students to consider possibilities for creating sustainable societies. These activities build skills in science, math, and the social sciences, while providing students the chance to apply learning to authentic problems observable in the world around them. Activity formats include graphing and data analysis, modeling, and group problem-solving. Participants receive a standards-aligned curriculum CD-ROM. Intended audience is upper elementary & middle school (4th-8th) science and math teachers.

You Are What You Eat: Fueling Your Body vs. Performance Expectations

Participants will examine a Problem Based Learning experience on Nutrition and Wellness. If a health-related issue is discovered, then nutritional and physical wellness concerns are heightened. This is an integrated Health Education Unit focusing on Nutrition and Physical Activity that can be taught in Health, Math or the Science classroom. Participants will go through the unit as students using their own research and interests to see the power of integration when solving real world problems. Students will choose from four real world scenarios to create a wellness plan for their person to follow: A fireman who has high blood pressure, a Rock Star who is on the road most of the year, A construction worker who is pre-diabetic and an Olympic marathon runner preparing for competition. The essential questions to address are how do each of these people fuel their bodies daily and how do they get or stay in the best possible shape they can be in to perform their individual jobs?

Whatever you teach, Science or Math, learning how to create several projects using the "mail-merge" feature of Word and Excel (or Google Docs and Sheets) that may allow you to save a lot of time could be a good idea: parent conferences reports, personalized students’ info sheets, vocabulary cards, and even a huge part of your lesson plans… any task that requires repetitive writing and that is based on tabulated data (that is, that can be completed using information you can store in an electronic worksheet) is easier when you know how to simplify the process with the tools you have in hand.

You may need to bring your own device with the complete working versions of Microsoft Word and Excel apps to practice at your own pace.

Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) is a different approach to science explorations. This presentation will introduce the concept of ADI and I will share some of the successes and challenges that I had implementing it in my classroom. An Introduction to Argument Driven Inquiry
Come learn how we began to use Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) labs to challenge and engage our students. The multi-step ADI process gets your students actively pursuing the "how" and "why" of science in collaboration with their peers. We will do an ADI chemistry ab, go through the steps together, and discuss how you could make any inquiry lab an ADI-style lab. Taking a step away from a traditional science class, the High School Research Initiative (HRI) is funded by the NIH Science Education Partnership Award and encourages a new experiential learning and project-based learning approach. First offered in the 2016-17 school year, the HRI offers a dual-enrollment course in science research, offering high school science credit (CTE Scientific Research and Design 8724.H900.Y, 8724.NC10.Y), as well as UT course credit (HRI Research Methods, NSC 309). This course offers a 2-prong approach to research: open-inquiry research (1st semester) and University of Texas collaborative research (2nd semester). In this session we will create some simple games we can use with our students to introduce the foundations of the Scratch programming language while we become familiar with the Scratch environment. These are the same games that our 3rd and 4th graders worked on during our Coding Club at McBee ES this year.

You may want to bring your own laptop to fully participate in the experience of basic game programming with Scratch!

This session will demonstrate a blended learning model for a Science classroom wherein students engage with content in a variety of ways, and at different paces. Students are provided with a clear structure for self-pacing and accountability. The model showcases the integration of a number of different technology tools, with non-tech workarounds for campuses not yet approaching a 1:1 student-device ratio. Finally, the model enables teachers to create small group learning environments within a larger classroom, which is useful for special education accommodation. Although the demonstration deals with science content, the model can easily be adapted to any subject. THIS IS AN IN-DEPTH VERSION of the session offered at the Blended Learning Summit. 

Attendees will wear two hats: teacher and student, to get a hands-on look at how blended learning can work in practice.

Please NOTE: This is NOT a training on BLEND platform (AISD's version of Canvas). This is about a classroom model that literally blends different kinds of learning. I will actually be using Google Classroom, but you could easily use the BLEND platform for the same purpose.

The primary topic during this sessions is how to promote communication about learned skills within students. This session will focus on how to incorporate Recap, a web tool, that allows users the opportunity to share out their thinking and to rate how well they are versed in that topic. The use of Recap can expand throughout the curriculum, but, for this session, we will explore how teachers can use this tool to gauge student understanding of science skills and to further expand their knowledge. Participants will be able to work both sides as a teacher and a student. Participants are encouraged to bring a device (laptop, mobile device, Chromebook) in order to fully participate. As the end of the session, my hope is that K-12 teachers will leave with a tool that they will be ready to use right away in their classrooms.

Creating a meaningful Anchor chart/graphic can be difficult. I will attempt to assist teachers in the realization that you don't need to be an artist to make meaningful anchor charts. Based on the needs of each session group, I will attempt to connect main ideas in digital and 2-D formats. Participating teachers will be able to brainstorm alone or in small groups to create a finished take-home anchor chart. We will see examples, plan, design, and illustrate our ideas. These skills will allow teachers to think outside what may generally be given in the curriculum to go deeper in explanations and visuals. These skills can be used in any subject. By exposing students to an inquiry-based, learn-by-doing activity that appeals to their hearts as well as their minds, Botball® addresses our nation’s need for a well-prepared, creative, yet disciplined workforce with leadership and teamwork experience. Using the Aug. 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse to Support Science & Math Lessons

This session covers activities for the solar eclipse that occurs on the first day of school, 8-21-17. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to integrate what is happening in the world outside into your science and math lessons. The primary audience is elementary teachers, with extensions into middle school math and science. This eclipse’s path of totality will cross the United States from OR to SC. Texas will have a partial eclipse to get kids excited about science in the world around them. Activities use simple, inexpensive materials to safely observe the solar eclipse and explain the phenomenon. Most can be used throughout the year to explain science and math TEKS, such as motion of the earth-sun-moon system and creating scale models. Activities are aimed at grades 3-5, but can be modified for grades 1-9. Teachers will leave with instructions for all activities, plus resources to view the total eclipse live and for the students to participate in citizen science during the eclipse.

Storytelling with Automata

In this hands-on workshop, participants will make a simple mechanical toy, or automaton, by using readily available materials such as cardboard, bamboo skewers, straws, and foam board. The automaton will then be used as a platform to tell a story as participants use a variety of materials to create a moving story automated by the toy mechanics. This simple project can be built upon to create a variety of movements that can be tied into several STEM related content including simple machines, mechanical advantage, energy, and Newton’s laws. 

 The model created in the workshop is a basic introduction to the wide world of automata. Additionally, the workshop provides a perfect example of how STEM related activities can be tied to literacy and other non-science related content for a true interdisciplinary lesson. Ancient automata were readily seen in ancient Greece as well as other ancient and modern cultures, and many times lead to the understanding and development of more elaborate inventions and machines that greatly impacted human society.

Toward a Culturally Responsive Classroom

Culturally Responsive Education (CRE) — also known as culturally relevant or culturally proficient education, and now considered one of AUSTIN ISD's "Six Cs" or power skills. But what the heck is it? CRE is a thoroughly researched and well-tested pedagogy that has started to gain traction in discussions and planning around school reform, and educational equity. New research shows how CRE affects the brain and enhances students' very ability to learn. This session aims to demystify culturally responsive pedagogy, providing concrete steps toward implementing best practices.

We will start with a brief history of inequity in Austin, particularly as it applies to education, move into "why" of CRE, vis-a-vis some introductory neuroscience, and then shift to strategies for building our teaching practice toward being culturally responsive educators. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of CRE and an assortment of resources for reinforcement (articles, books, and *human* resources right here in AISD).

Outdoor STEM learning with the TreeFolks Austin Tree Map

The goal of this session is to teach participants how to use the TreeFolks Austin Tree Map, a free, web-based tree survey tool, to create a fun, outdoor, hands-on STEM activity on campus. The Tree Map facilitates and enriches outdoor learning and addresses sustainability by using iTree software to calculate ecosystem benefits provided by trees. This session will involve a slide presentation and, if we can access outdoor space, a hands-on tree mapping demonstration covering tree identification, measuring, and adding trees to the map. We will provide all of the tools needed for this demonstration. Participants will learn how to use the map and how to identify, measure, and map trees. Although this is a fun educational activity for all ages, this session focuses on 4th grade-12th grade participants.

Watershed Detectives: Exploring Local Environmental Issues

Engage students in understanding important local issues related to water quality, flood safety, and endangered species habitat through hands-on experiments, PBL, technology integration and field investigations. Watershed Detectives offers the Fish Kill Mystery, flooding experiments and field trip opportunities. In the Fish Kill Mystery, based on a pollution event that happened in Austin, students experiment with watershed models and water quality tests to locate the source of contamination. To learn about flooding, students build models of low water crossings to observe water washing a car off the road and use a free GIS web map to determine if they live in a floodplain and create a map showing low water crossings on their way to school. Field trip opportunities include water quality testing of local streams, caving into the Edwards Aquifer and learning about endangered salamander habitat at Barton Springs. Lessons are correlated to the TEKS and come with free educational resources.

As a Science Coach I have to collect data and turn it around to make sure our lessons are filling in the gaps. We create and modify lessons after the data is collected to target specific areas of learning.

Using Word and Excel (or Google Docs and Sheets) to save time and do more

Whatever you teach, Science or Math, learning how to create several projects using the "mail-merge" feature of Word and Excel (or Google Docs and Sheets) that may allow you to save a lot of time could be a good idea: parent conferences reports, personalized students’ info sheets, vocabulary cards, and even a huge part of your lesson plans… any task that requires repetitive writing and that is based on tabulated data (that is, that can be completed using information you can store in an electronic worksheet) is easier when you know how to simplify the process with the tools you have in hand.

You may need to bring your own device with the complete working versions of Microsoft Word and Excel apps to practice at your own pace.

As student access to technology increases, so does the need to provide digital access to instruction. Participants will be guided through the process of creating his/her own instructional video for classroom use. To maximize this experience, participants should bring a laptop with microphone access provided by most school districts, and a tablet. However, those materials will not be required to participate. Both presenters have years of experience with creating and using videos in mathematics classrooms, and are ready to share ideas!

Observational Astronomy

Teachers will learn the basics of observational astronomy, outside at night, how to use a telescope, how to find constellations in the sky, hear star stories to share with their students and also learn how to bring the concepts of the scale of the solar system, reason for the seasons, moon phases and eclipses as well as why the north star changes to their students in a kinesthetic/tactile and engaging way.
