Argument Driven Inquiry for Middle School Science
Limited Capacity seats available

Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) is a different approach to science explorations. This presentation will introduce the concept of ADI and I will share some of the successes and challenges that I had implementing it in my classroom. An overview of the stages of ADI as well as materials and access to lessons will be provided. In an ADI lesson Students are provided with an Essential Question which leads them to design and implement their own labs. Different groups of students provide feedback to each other on lab design. After lab implementation and data collection student groups choose how to display their data and share with other student groups again.

Understanding by Design - Creating Units with Project Based Learning
Limited Capacity filling up

Teachers will work to look at Unit Plans, Daily Lesson Plans and other documents, resources and collegial advice, input and feedback to redesign units as UbD and Project Based Learning Units. However, our work is not done! We will implement Project Based Learning into the units as well. Engagement, Assessment and Connections are all key to increasing Student Achievement. Please bring a unit you plan to teach for the upcoming year and a device.

Update:  I will be providing a link here for you to take a survey.  This will help me in putting together different exemplars in subject matter and grade levels.   I'll also be posting the presentation shortly.

Essentially, we will:

1. Explain and Describe PBL
2.  Provide examples of PBL
3.  Discuss the 3 stages of Understanding by Design
4.  Dig deeper into Essential Questions, Understandings and Assessments
5.  Come out with a UbD that is PBL oriented - draft, draft, draft

We have a lot packed into this presentation and workshop.  Come prepared with units, work, etc.

An Introduction to Argument Driven Inquiry
Come learn how we began to use Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) labs to challenge and engage our students. The multi-step ADI process gets your students actively pursuing the "how" and "why" of science in collaboration with their peers. We will do an ADI chemistry ab, go through the steps together, and discuss how you could make any inquiry lab an ADI-style lab. I will also share the lessons we've learned in our first year of implementation and what we'll do more of next year. This workshop has a chemistry focus, but the ADI approach could be adapted to all levels and all fields.

Science Fair 101 : Developing Scientists in the 21st Century
Limited Capacity seats available

To science fair or not to science fair, that is the question facing many elementary schools today. Despite the recent opposition to the value of science fairs, the process still offers many learning opportunities and much inspiration. Learn how to start (or restart) the process at your home campus, with fresh new ways of looking at science fairs to incorporate more meaningful participation and projects. Additionally, learn about alternative science exhibitions (such as STEM nights) that inspire both the students and the teachers of your campus. Presenters will share a step by step "how to" on getting science fair started at your school. We will visit Austin Energy Science Fest's website as well.

Project Based Learning vs. Problem Based Learning: What is the difference and how can I apply them towards early childhood and primary grade students' learning? Two of the trainings that I have attended were instructed by high school and middle school teachers. Toward a Culturally Responsive Classroom
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Culturally Responsive Education (CRE) — also known as culturally relevant or culturally proficient education, and now considered one of AUSTIN ISD's "Six Cs" or power skills. But what the heck is it? CRE is a thoroughly researched and well-tested pedagogy that has started to gain traction in discussions and planning around school reform, and educational equity. New research shows how CRE affects the brain and enhances students' very ability to learn. This session aims to demystify culturally responsive pedagogy, providing concrete steps toward implementing best practices.

We will start with a brief history of inequity in Austin, particularly as it applies to education, move into "why" of CRE, vis-a-vis some introductory neuroscience, and then shift to strategies for building our teaching practice toward being culturally responsive educators. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of CRE and an assortment of resources for reinforcement (articles, books, and *human* resources right here in AISD).
