Taking a step away from a traditional science class, the High School Research Initiative (HRI) is funded by the NIH Science Education Partnership Award and encourages a new experiential learning and project-based learning approach. First offered in the 2016-17 school year, the HRI offers a dual-enrollment course in science research, offering high school science credit (CTE Scientific Research and Design 8724.H900.Y, 8724.NC10.Y), as well as UT course credit (HRI Research Methods, NSC 309). This course offers a 2-prong approach to research: open-inquiry research (1st semester) and University of Texas collaborative research (2nd semester). Trained by a UTeach Master Teacher, the high school teachers teach the class at high school campuses and facilitate the UT collaborations.
